The Helly Hansen Kestrel TR is quite a pleasant surprise. Helly Hansen is not necessarily expected to be a strong player in the trail running market…
First note, the Helly Hansen Kestrel TR runs large, especially for wider feet. So, it’s important to choose the size carefully (be cautious when ordering online…). Once you accept that, you discover a really pleasant cushioning: soft, present, but not compromising stability. At the same time, it provides interesting stability. The 7mm drop is not too noticeable. We would have liked the Helly Hansen Kestrel TR to have a better forward roll to help propel the shoe in the stride. It feels like you’re running flat, just trying to push the shoe forward. This is probably the downside of the Helly Hansen Kestrel TR: it’s a very comfortable, all-around shoe, but its performance level is somewhat limited.
The comfort is very pleasant, with effective foam surrounding the ankle and heel area.
The rock plate is reassuring on the forefoot. The flat laces provide good support and don’t require a double knot. The thin, very flexible tongue does not cause any rubbing at the ankle fold.
Designed with no visible seams, this Helly Hansen Kestrel TR is well-made. The breathable mesh seems durable: time will tell.
The grip of the sole is effective. The sole doesn’t collect mud. At 300 grams in size 42.5, the weight is consistent with this type of versatile shoe.
A good all-around trail shoe. Very pleasant cushioning and great comfort. Mild rebound.
