The fifth version of this Hoka model, named after the legendary Mafate circus on Réunion Island, stays true to its original DNA while introducing a few key updates.
With the Hoka Mafate 5, don’t expect a revolution, but rather some welcome evolutions in terms of durability and dynamic performance.
The Mafate’s signature cushioning is still very much present, but it feels less overwhelming—softer, but no longer spongy as in previous models. This is largely due to a new foam compound and an updated midsole geometry that enhances lateral foot support while keeping the cushioning controlled and balanced. That said, let’s be clear: runners looking for precision, especially around the ankle, might be disappointed—there’s still noticeable foot roll. The Hoka Mafate 5 is clearly built for comfort, impact protection, medium to heavy builds, and long-distance runs.
Although cushioning is prominent under the forefoot and heel, the Mafate 5’s midsole doesn’t feel dull—it has regained some energy, making it much more effective on rolling terrain. It successfully combines plush cushioning with responsiveness. The underfoot protection is excellent, especially against sharp rocks, allowing runners to go full speed on technical descents.
Grip is excellent on climbs and very reassuring on descents. The rock plate performs well, though we did wonder if it could be slightly more protective along the sides of the foot.
The upper mesh is tough, the foot entry is easy (thanks to a very practical heel pull tab), and the lace adjustment is just as solid. The 8 mm drop is well-suited to the shoe’s intended use. The Hoka Mafate 5 is also compatible with gaiters. Weight is a reasonable 330 grams.
A trail shoe with outstanding grip and substantial cushioning, ideal for runners prioritizing comfort. Offers a surprisingly good energy return on more runnable sections of trail.
