Hoka One One Elevon

In Hoka’s extensive road running category (Clifton, Gaviota, Arahi, Tracer, Cavu, Mach, Hupana, Bondi, Vanquish…), here is the new Elevon. So, how do you choose? Do you look at the drop or weight or where you want to run? Here are you few guidelines to choosing (or not) this Elevon.

Aesthetically and technically these shoes are constructed in two parts. An imposing sole comes around to envelop the top part of the shoe, giving a combination of finesse and flexibility of the upper with good protection and grip underfoot.

On the scales the Elevon displays 289g in 422/3. A Hoka Mach weighs 220g. The Elevon is without doubt our preferred choice for road running.

The Elevon are shoes for road training (even possibly slightly off road). You can feel the slight increase of weight but nothing major. The foot strike is firm and stable, even after many miles, the interior foam does fold slightly but doesn’t change the foot strike. You don’t notice the cushioning, yet after many miles you know that it is present especially under the heel. Their dosage has been well designed because the cushioning is there when you need it; if you are off-balance at the rear, tired so you hit the heel first more, etc. Contrary to other Hoka products, most notably the trail running models, where the sole is very flexible, the Elevon is very suited to heavier runners.

You don’t lose energy on the forefoot, despite the thickness of the shoe’s sole. If you are lucky enough to have a forefoot strike the Elevon accelerates. Their 5mm drop is pertinent for this type of product.

The heel protection is very good, both comfortably enveloped and precise. The Hoka mesh, that is used on all their products,  is extremely performant because it combines breathability with flexibility.

The finishing is top of the range. If you use these shoes on the road and easy off-road paths as indicated the life span of these shoes is good.

The flat lacing is functional, you need to lace up from the front, the pressure is evenly spread out and you don’t need to do a double knot. The tongue protects the upside of the foot and stays in place.

The Hoka Elevon are original shoes thanks to their design and technical choices. Stable, firm foot strike with cushioning that is present when needed. Heavier runners will appreciate these qualities. For others, in Hoka’s wide range a lighter cheaper pair would be just as good in terms of performance.
