In the Hoka One One range of road running shoes kitted with carbon plates there are two models: the Carbon X (180 euros) weighing 238g, very reactive, its aimed at longer distances. And the Rocket X (160 euros) the lightest in the range, 210g (215g in 42 2/3), designed for relatively short races, a pure racing shoe. We tested the latter.
You don’t need to look for a women’s version, this Hoka One One Rocket X is unisex.
It’s always an event taking a carbon plate shoe out for a spin, you always expect to blow your lap times and transform into Usain Bolt. Sadly, this is not the case, it is difficult to transform mules into top athletes! But, and this nuance is important, with the carbon plate, you gain a lot of reactivity, rebound and comfort. These points are transversal to all products of this type. Carbon is not an exclusive technology from a technical point of view: we have shoes that are both efficient and comfortable in their ground contact, with nuances like the Asics Metaracer (https: //www.test4outside. com / product / asics-metaracer-tokyo /) for example, a little firmer. On the other hand, the price of these shoes is high, they are generally around 200 euros or even more. With a listed price of 160 euros in the catalogue, we would say that the Hoka One One Rocket X is not bad pricewise.
Out running, we discover a shoe that constantly makes you want to push off in the stride and reach forward. The transition, and foot rocker are very effective. We also immediately notice the sole’s fabulous response, the rebound effect that some runners can undoubtedly find disproportionate but in any case, you have the feeling you’re going fast (the stopwatch does not necessarily show stratospheric differences compared with another shoe). Another important point with the Hoka One One Rocket X is its cushioning, softness and roll at the rear of the shoe, you have to run it correctly despite its propensity to stick to the terrain.
The Hoka One One Rocket X’s advantages are its ability to stamp out fatigue due to misplacement errors associated with its rebound, storage and energetic bounce. We feel like there is a vibrant interface between the foot and road.
Even though laterally it’s fairly imprecise, it runs with great fluidity. The forefoot has a comfortable toe box. The upper is like a slipper. The heel envelopment is very precise yet comfortable. Classic functional lacing and the top of the tongue may feel a bit stiff on the first few strides, but it becomes softer afterwards.
This Hoka One One Rocket X is for runners who want to be performant on short distances with a very responsive shoe. The carbon plate and sole provide strong rebound as well as wonderful comfort in the stride. The shoe doesn’t need to be exclusive (except for the price) because you don’t have to have an elaborate running technique to use it and feel like you’re going fast.
