The Inov8 Trailfly Speed is a lightweight shoe (260 grams on our scale) that sits very close to the ground, despite its 6 mm drop. That’s largely due to the low stack height of the sole.
This results in excellent stability, solid ground feel, and good precision on technical terrain. However, let’s address the main drawback right away: the upper is quite low-cut, and ankle and heel support are minimal.
On the positive side, we appreciated the balance between cushioning and responsiveness. Although the Inov8 Trailfly Speed is clearly designed for technical trails, it also performs well on more runnable sections. The midsole provides a noticeable, but not excessive, amount of shock absorption, along with a bit of energy return, which adds to its versatility.
The outsole grip is effective and secure, delivering confident traction. At first glance, we thought the toe box was wide, similar to Altra shoes — but that turned out to be an optical illusion. The design makes the forefoot appear more spacious than it actually is.
Build quality is excellent, and the toe protection is very solid.
Overall, the Inov8 Trailfly Speed is an agile, low-profile trail shoe that performs best on technical terrain, offering precision, grip, and a touch of versatility on faster sections.
