What to wear under a ski protective pant? Technical underwear is often too light in cold weather conditions. Sometimes, it makes sense to add a dedicated insulation layer. This is where the insulating shorts come into play. A few brands offer this type of product, though not always perfected. One can choose between different lengths, either above the knee or below, like the Helly Hansen we are currently testing.
Let’s not beat around the bush, this Klättermusen Lovar, from the Swedish brand, isn’t cheap: 200 euros. You can find another short, also Swedish, from the Stoïc brand, three times cheaper, padded with synthetic fibers and merino wool. Granted, it’s shorter…
So, what about this Klättermusen Lovar? First of all, it’s designed with a Primaloft base, which ensures good insulation. The shorts are warm but not too much, making them suitable for activities like backcountry skiing. Light, they dry quickly, and they cover the knee without hindering flexion. You don’t feel cold in this area, and it’s very comfortable.
The other major positive point concerns its two zippers on the sides, allowing you to put on the Klättermusen Lovar without having to, for example, remove your ski boots or even your muddy boots during summer bivouacs when you want to stay warm.
The Klättermusen Lovar compresses into one of its side pockets, which serves as a pouch.
We liked its fit, especially around the waist: the Klättermusen Lovar doesn’t slip. It’s securely tightened with an adjustable elastic and a belt that you forget about. We had some doubts regarding the elastic tightening system at the front of the shorts, which is quite prominent, but it’s not an issue. The same goes for the snap buttons at the hips. However, we didn’t test it with a climbing harness…
What might it be missing? Like most of these insulating ski shorts, a fly? Note: it is a unisex product.
