Lange RX Superleggera

OK the latest trend is to find solutions for making ski alpine boots lighter. This could be beneficial for alpine boots if the ratio lightness/rigidity is conserved. Head with its new Nexo LYT (tested here: https://www.test4outside.com/en/produit/head-nexo-lyt/ ) without doubt went a bit too far making them too light and the foothold suffered. Lange on the other hand, has managed to employ lightweight materials, notably the Grilamid and the RX Superleggera has a 120 flex and weighs 1800g for size 27.5. To give you an idea and a comparison, the Lange RX 130 (2018 model) weighs 2200g.

The RX Superleggera is not “ultra-light” but there is definitely a notable loss in weight. When you walk the benefit is unarguable, the same whilst skiing, you really feel the difference at the end of a day’s skiing: reduced fatigue. The problem afterwards is when you put on your old ski boots you wonder how on earth you managed to drag around so much extra weight!

The major point is the combination between lightness and foothold whilst skiing. Even if the flex is 120 (we actually thought it was more rigid than that) the energy transfers are practically equivalent to the old RX generation boot. Lange has worked its DualCore concept, the plastic bi-injections that enable the development of rigid areas for pressure transfers and less pressure points for more comfort and better flex control.

We appreciated the progressive flex on the snow. They are good boots for teaching skiing, for example, not too stiff on a daily basis but sufficiently performant to progress at a constant speed. You will find the RX precision with its 100mm last. The foot envelopment is quite firm, as the liner foam reminds us of a racing car seat more than a soft inviting sofa. Precision is foremost.

The warmth of the liner seems standard for a boot that targets performance. Waterproofness is ok on this model, it would be necessary to check with use if the joint at the front of the boot continues to fulfil its function.

Putting them on is relatively simple, the tongue adjusts perfectly thanks to the use of the strap. Your foot slides easily into the liner thanks to the materials designed for this purpose. The tongue and interior of the liner are lined with thin polar fleece.

The buckles are stylish and very powerful to use. They are easy to handle and don’t damage your gloves: all the edges are rounded. The collar strap is classic, wide and powerful; they could probably gain a few grams by changing the design of the strap…

The overall design is slick, too slick maybe? A nice detail is at the heel; Lange have kitted out the RX with a small metal plaque (see photo) to cancel out the wear and tear due to butting up to the ski bindings.

The crimped sole is quite pleasant walking on tarmac or any hard zone. The heel doesn’t slip much but the front can be a little slippery if you’re not careful.

The Lange RX Superleggera are excellent boots, both lightweight and precise. The brand hasn’t fallen into the trap of producing a lightweight boot at the cost of its skiability.
