We decided to test this Leatherman T2 multipurpose knife from the Free range. It is the most compact model in the range and it has a weight to match: 90g.
It has 8 tools to affront a large number of situations: a blade, awl, bottle opener (essential), pry tool, package opener, Philips screwdriver, medium and extra-small flathead screwdriver.
The very sharp blade opens easily thanks to a hole and a clip blocks it open so that it doesn’t accidentally close on your fingers. It’s quite short, 5.5cm. Very good lateral stiffness and you can cut practically anything from wood, leather to plastic. The safety lock is easy to handle even with cold hands.
The handle is quite wide and it has a nice non-slip finish.
Important: if you want to use any of the other tools you mustn’t open the blade at the same time as you could hurt yourself with a tool + blade. You push the tools open with your nails or end of your finger using the little spigots.
The Leatherman Free T2 is easily cleaned and insensitive to mud, sand, etc. It can be attached to a lanyard (not included) that fits through the end of the handle.
All the tools and the blade are shock resistance, the screwdrivers are tough enough on stubborn screws, ski bindings, etc. The only downside is what the Leatherman calls the “medium screwdriver”. It also serves as a package opener. The concept is intelligent and practical, the edge of the screwdriver is sharp (for opening packages): but it does wear down quickly and creates a burr when used as a screwdriver.
The Leatherman Free T2 is designed and made in Portland, Oregon. The brand gives a 25-year guarantee, which doesn’t cover sharpening.
The multipurpose Leatherman Free T2 is really recommended for the outdoors because it is so light, it has numerous very practical functions: sharp knife, screwdrivers, etc.
