Garmont Trace High BOA GTX

The surprising Garmont Trace High BOA GTX was initially designed for snowshoeing, but its use can easily be extended to hiking.

This product is anything but ordinary thanks to its double BOA dial system. Despite its high-cut design, tightening (and loosening!) is quick and easy. However, it’s worth noting that the BOA dials used here, unlike those found on cycling or alpine shoes, need to be disengaged in order to loosen the fit—you can’t just turn them in the opposite direction to fine-tune. That said, the BOA system on the Garmont Trace High BOA GTX is extremely practical, fast, and highly efficient in evenly distributing pressure across the foot.

The upper opens wide to allow the foot to slide in easily—in less than five seconds, you’re ready to go. The contact with the shell is fairly stiff, which makes sense given that the Garmont Trace High BOA GTX is designed for snowshoeing. It offers support at the heel and around the ankle. That said, we would have preferred a softer, more comfortable collar. Depending on calf height, some users might experience a bit of discomfort at the top.

Even though the Garmont Trace High BOA GTX retains a good amount of warmth despite its slim build, it’s best paired with thick socks for added comfort and to minimize contact with the stiff outer shell.

This boot is precise and streamlined, allowing excellent foot placement while hiking. For snowshoeing, it offers an impressive weight-to-performance ratio. While the forefoot is on the stiff side, walking remains comfortable overall.

Equipped with a Gore-Tex membrane, it’s highly resistant to moisture—even when fully submerged up to the top of the collar! We absolutely loved it in deep mud and on stormy days when water streamed down our ponchos… Plus, it dries quickly.

The Michelin sole provides excellent grip, performs well in muddy conditions, and adapts nicely to different snowshoe bindings. The weight is reasonable: 645 grams in size 42.5, according to our scale.

Last but not least, when it’s time to drive, simply release the top dial to free up ankle movement.

In short: an excellent, highly technical winter boot originally built for snowshoeing—but also a convincing performer on the hiking trail.
