We tested the new Lowa Amplux 2 on the rather wet trails of spring 2025. This shoe offers a relatively firm ground contact, which led some testers to consider it more of a fast hiking shoe than a true trail running model. Indeed, it lacks the energy return, cushioning, and forward propulsion found in many of the benchmark trail running shoes on the market.
That said, its stiffness is offset by excellent ground feel and high precision during foot placement. However, it requires efficient running form—otherwise, the knees and lower back may take a toll. Over long distances, that becomes more noticeable. On technical terrain, mountain trails, and off-camber sections, the Lowa Amplux 2 performs well. Foot placement is solid and the outsole grip is reliable. With a 6 mm drop, the shoe provides a close-to-the-ground feel. The toe box is relatively wide, offering good room in the forefoot.
The toe guard offers excellent protection. The heel sits securely at the back of the shoe, and entry is easy.
A good fast hiking shoe. But it lacks the dynamic ride needed to truly stand out in trail running.
