LOWE ALPINE AIRZONE TREK 35-45

FIRST

This Lowe Alpine Airzone Trek 35-45 pack is perfectly designed for day trips, maybe more, because it has many good points: adaptable volume, very good carrying comfort, ventilation and durability.

We really appreciated it on our excursions where a smaller volume pack must also accommodate heavy equipment: tent, sleeping bag, food, clothes, water, etc. Its many compartments, and especially the large areas kitted out with stretchy netting allow you to modulate and always find a place to spread the load.

A damp tent, or wet clothes, naturally sit well here in these nets or in the lower (separate) compartment. The top is extendable and adds on 10 liters. If you want to go out for the day, and don’t have a lightweight pack – which generally has limited carrying ability – the Lowe Alpine Airzone Trek 35-45 also does the trick: you don’t end up with a heavy monster on your back.

Apart from its versatility the Lowe Alpine Airzone Trek 35-45 has a very ventilated back with the improved version of the Airzone system. To summarize, the back mesh is in one piece from the shoulders to the hips. The lumbar region can be surprising at first because it’s quite rigid but once you start walking you no longer notice it. The ventilated fabric on the back is made from only one piece: there’s no stitching or friction/pressure points for optimal comfort.

The straps are also breathable and slightly stretchy. At first glance they seem to be less comfortable, but they are very effective in use. The belt can be adjusted at two points with well-proportioned straps that slide easily. The excess strap can be blocked with a plastic ring on either side.

Lowe Alpine hasn’t forgotten anything on this pack: emergency whistle, key ring, ice axe and pole attachments (not very practical the pole attachment), area for a water bladder and rain cover.

The latter is well designed, it is stored logically at the bottom of the Lowe Alpine Airzone Trek 35-45 and stays clipped to the pack when it is used: so, it doesn’t blow away in gusts of wind. What needs improvement: the two side attachment systems, aren’t easy to manipulate with cold fingers or when moving in heavy rain.

The aluminum frame does not squeak and enables you to carry with an excellent load distribution, all without pressure points on your back. There is a particular inherent rigidity: when you bend down or bend sideways. This is classic for this type of pack that is designed to carry heavy loads. With the waist belt which provides excellent support, youe are ready to go far and wide.

The back adjustment is quick and easy. Inside the Lowe Alpine Airzone Trek 35-45 there’s a Velcro system so you can change the shoulder straps’ height. Another practical detail is the large zip that opens the bag completely like a duffle bag.

We noticed here and there that some straps a bit long (designed for bigger builds), a few reinforcements, large zips and elastics. Lowe Alpine may not have gone for being the lightest, but it is very tough and doesn’t tear.

The Lowe Alpine Airzone Trek 35-45 is a very good pack, and one of its many qualities is its carrying comfort and back ventilation. You can go far and wide with all you need for a day or longer. We logically gave this pack the Test4outside.com FIRST Award.
