The Sportful Fiandre Extreme NeoShell is a tough and durable cycling jacket. This shows a bit in its weight, 300g for the size M. The zip is well proportioned; the stitching is tough and lined on the outside with a waterproofing strip. We also really appreciated the zip cover at the neckline, after hours and hours of riding we didn’t notice any friction or pressure points. The tab doesn’t lift up either when riding at speed to whack you on the chin.
With its slim fitting cut nothing flaps around in the wind when riding, you have a lovely impression of fluidity and aerodynamics. Be careful when sizing, as the M is closer to a size small. The fabric is stretchy though and really follows your movements.
The collar is high enough without being annoying when you move your head in all directions. They have even managed to shape the neckline so that there isn’t that irritating fold when you lift your head. The collar fits snugly and the wind has nowhere to enter. The wrists and hipline are the same, and at the hem the elastomer band works superbly stopping the jacket rising up.
The three back pockets are made from a fabric that isn’t very stretchy but this means your items remain stuck to your back whilst riding. A waterproof compartment could be useful for a telephone, to protect it from the rain and also from sweat.
Whilst riding the jacket stops the wind but you still have that sensation of chilliness, as there is no insulation; always the problem with windbreakers. So it really is necessary to wear an insulating sleeveless jacket like the Rapha Brevet Insulated Gilet: https://www.test4outside.com/en/produit/rapha-brevet-insulated-gilet/. Which then opens up the question of sizing – as it is so well cut and fits snugly, think carefully how you will use it to have the correct size and ample room for eventual underlayers.
When the temperature increases (in the uphill, atmospheric changes), the NeoShell regulates and encourages ventilation. It is very efficient, but once you are at full effort the humidity soon finds itself trapped inside. So open it up fast! For all other speeds it is very comfortable and efficient; obviously all factors need to be taken into account, body temperature, exterior temperature, speed, etc.
This is a high performance jacket, with a snug fit for those rides needing a tough, dependable waterproof windbreaker.
