The Moab FST 2 GTX is a hiking, or fast hiking shoe. The first noticeable remark is that these Merrell are designed for narrow feet. They are not very wide and even the opening to get your foot in isn’t wide.
But – If you have narrow feet these Merrell Moab FST 2 GTX are for you! They feel like slippers! Either side of the ankles there is generous foam padding, even too much for our taste. But that said we suffered no hot spots, or rubbing. With such precise foot envelopment over the entire forefoot these Merrell are almost rubbing shoulders with trail running shoes.
The Merrell Moab FST 2 GTX has sole cushioning in the heel, just enough to filter and bring comfort, but not too much to compromise walking with a big backpack, you keep good stability on the terrain. You could run with these but that’s not their true design, but running a little along a fast hike is fine. There isn’t much cushioning under the forefoot and the 370g is heavy for a trail running shoe. The foot strike is both fluid and laterally slightly rigid, but enough to attack technical terrain with unsupported ankles. With this in mind, with low ankle shoes, wouldn’t it be better to wear trail running shoes? A question to meditate.
The Vibram® Megagrip sole is brilliant on all terrain except wet limestone. The lugs don’t gather mud or catch little stones. To be very fussy we would’ve liked a few more lugs at the heel for better traction in the downhill.
The small strap at the heel is very useful for putting the shoes on, and a good sized loop that you can actually get your finger in! (unlike some brands…)
The round laces need a double knot to avoid it coming undone. The tongue is very thick (could be thinner).
The stone guard is flexible and covers enough of the shoe for hiking usage.
The breathability and waterproofing are standard for this type of shoe. The mesh stretches a bit after time: so take this into account when buying them (remember you will also probably wearing thicker socks too). They are well-finished, the materials are of high-quality and carefully constructed.
These Merrell Moab FST 2 GTX are good for hiking or fast hiking. Well made, precise, with good grip, you can walk fast on mountainous terrain. Designed for narrow feet.
