We are rather repetitive each time we receive an On-Running test, the Cloudstratus are unusual shoes, and not just in one way.
The On-Running Cloudstratus were designed for road use, training and have original cushioning. It’s a mixture between softness and spring. Honestly it is really pleasant for heavier runners who are looking for good filtration. The On-Running Cloudstratus repspect the footstrike, stride and lateral stability: the sole remains in place and does its job absorbing the least shocks. They have an 8mm drop.
They are suited to heel strikers but even so they filter consistently along the entire foot. In very steep downhills the On-Running Cloudstratus was truly appreciated because you can go for it without the slightest hesitation.
They aren’t particularly light: 320g for size 42.5, but soooo comfortable! The Swiss brand didn’t skimp on the foam padding around the ankles. The ridged heel support is also an impressive stability. We did wonder why On-Running reinforced the stone guard so much for road running shoes? So we decided to run the On-Running Cloudstratus on the trails where they are efficient on runnable paths. But care must be taken because the grip isn’t designed for this and is slippery on cross slopes.
The Cloudstratus envelops the foot beautifully and with precision thanks to their design, even if they are designed for wide feet. The crossover lacing system is both aesthetic and surprising. The thick tongue is perfect. We used them in Morocco on the large hard sandy beaches and with their superb cushioning they were perfect. The mesh allowed a little sand to pass through and the soles did trap the odd pebble occasionally.
The narrow laces stay put. They are once again beautifully finished with attention to detail, right down to the marvelous mini Swiss flag (on the right shoe), careful collaging, seams, assemblies, in general the overall design of each tiny detail.
The On-Running Cloudstratus are surprising by their original capabilities on the road. They are for wide feet, comfortable with great cushioning, yet they remain reactive. They have a beautiful and flattering design and finishings.
