Petzl already have a wide range of helmets. Everyone can find the helmet to suit their needs. The Boreo is a versatile helmet that is designed for the climbing fraternity, mountaineers, speleologists, via ferrata and canyoning.
Our task was to see what this new model brought to the market.
Toughness was at the center of the designers concern. The exterior shell is made from thick ABS and the interior is made in two parts of expanded foam (polystyrene and polypropylene). The extra length at the sides and back increase the protected area. Even though there is this extra coverage the look of the helmet is still aesthetic, and with an extensive range of colors, the look is yours to choose.
The CN and UIAGM standards have been applied and lengthened onto the impact points at the back and sides of the head, even more than the standard norms.
We tried the M/L model, which is the biggest. Our scales weighed it in at 355g. This is a reasonable weight for its level of protection. Even after hours and hours of action, it remains comfortable.
For exact comfort you need to take a bit of time adjusting correctly, it is well-designed for a perfect fit to any shaped head. The interior adjustment system changes the height and length. We found it easier to reduce the head circumference than to increase it.
The entire system can be stored inside the helmet for transporting or storing.
The Petzl Boreo came out without any scratches from our usage whilst climbing and banging against things. Once it is well-adjusted it sits very comfortably, you can almost undo the chin strap and it doesn’t move, and you do notice the difference in the extra protection.
The straps are connected to the helmet via the four connector points that can be used for attaching the head lamp on the outside of the ABS shell. The straps are thin and flexible and do not have a meeting point adjustment. We didn’t find it necessary as the Borneo sits so well and is well-balanced on all different heads. The two sizes seem to cover all the head size range.
The chin strap is not closed with a magnetitic clip like some of the brand’s other models, but by a simple classic buckle, less easy to handle with thick gloves on.
The lateral openings that manage ventilation are enough for mountain activities in all seasons.
In very hot conditions they were maybe a little limited.
The availability of being able to fix a headlamp or visor from the same brand is extremely useful.
The Petzl’s Borneo provides a model that insists on durability and extremely high protection for all mountain activities including: mountaineering, climbing, via ferrata, canyoning, speleology, etc.
