The Nao+ from Petzl is a preferred choice for trail runners, ski tourers and mountaineers. This lamp does everything they need.
Compared to the first generation design it has remained the same, on the outside. The same battery carrying system. The adjusting cords have been replaced by an elastic which undeniably improves comfort.
There is also a Bluetooth logo, which means there are personalization possibilities.
The battery is of course rechargeable with the use of a USB key.
The diode for charging is always facing the wall when plugged directly onto a wall plug – so you can’t follow the progress of the battery charging on a scale of 1 to 3.
This lamp proved performant and reliable throughout our long tests, on the Marathon des Sables in Peru, in the pouring rain in the Alps, out and about in the mountains.
It weighs 190g (same as the previous model), it may be a little heavier than other headlamps but the Nao+ assures 750 lumens of light beam (350 for the previous model), which means you have real security when out on any kind of adventure.
You can of course vary the size of the light beam with the use of a button on the right, which is also easy to use with gloves on. There is a red diode light that flashes on the back of the battery pack.
It also has a very useful skill Reactive Light technology that adapts its power depending on its needs: that means the light beam adjusts automatically when you go from lighting up the path in front of you, to reading a map, so you don’t get blinded by the light. It is undeniably useful.
Of course all the functions are accessible using the MyPetzl Light application so you can configure your lamp directly through your smartphone via Bluetooth. It is super easy to use. By using the App battery management is very interesting via Max Autonomy or Max Power. Therefore you always know where you are concerning the battery life and light source. With the Trail running option for example, you have the number of hours available depending on the power you are using; Max Autonomy, Standard or Max Power. Also for the two light modes: Reactive and Constant. Perfect.
The red diode at the rear can also be activated via the app, either on flashing or constant mode. To manage the lighting you can select a profile (multi-activity, mountaineering, trail running) those proposed by Petzl, or create one yourself. The menu “live” enables you to directly adjust the lamp’s power using a curser. With the “Emergency” menu you can write a short message which is then transmitted as Morse code with the light. The “lock” button prevents any accidental switching on of the lamp and losing valuable battery life.
It is therefore difficult to gauge the lifespan of the battery with all the different possibilities of usage.
This is definitely a very well-designed lamp, functional, robust and with 750 lumens. No doubt Petzl will be able to boost the battery life.
