Quechua MH500 tige basse

The MH500 is presented as a hiking shoe for the mountains. We tested them for several days in warm dry conditions, and one rainy day, on rocky paths with some inclines. First of all they are nice looking shoes with their leather upper and over all ergonomics are well designed. Very comfortable and pleasant to wear. Designed for all terrain use, the protective reinforcements envelop the front of the foot, but not far back enough on the sides, and as the reinforcements are too short they create an area that wears out. The shoes are comfortable when walking. Foothold is good with a lacing system that is good if you take care to spread the pressure: as the eyelets are uniformly in line tightening compresses everywhere and especially at the top of the foot near the last eyelets, which can cut off your circulation. The tongue is a bit too short, which means you can’t reduce the tightening effect of the lacing and if you have wide feet the lacing slips underneath the tongue. The best way to adjust the lacing correctly is to walk for about fifteen minutes and then readjust them.

Weight-wise they are average for this type of walking shoe. The sole has good grip. On dry ground, no problems! On wet ground they also work perfectly. Cushioning is fine, with the passage of time you would need to see how they pan out.

They are quite stiff to begin with but after a while loosen up and become more flexible. This is useful for improved flexibility but it does mean you lose a bit of efficiency on chaotic terrain, and underfoot you need to see with time if a problem arises due to the sole bending at a specific point. The MH500 provides good stability on easy and technical terrain. If you are carrying a heavy back pack you need to be more careful. The heel is lacking a bit of width and the back of the heel doesn’t go up high enough to grip the heel in place. Waterproof, we stayed nice and dry, of course after a while the rain will creep in from the top of the shoes because they are not ankle high. Breathability is standard and you don’t get boiling hot feet. Great for low mountain usage, and not so good by the sea where the leather and heat don’t necessarily go together.

These are stylish shoes that are good value for money for easy day hiking on technical terrain. Maybe the ankle high MH500 and only 10 euros more would be more adapted to longer, tougher hikes.
