Quechua MH950

This season Quechua has tackled the famous inner conflict that haunts every hiker in the morning before leaving the refuge – “shorts or pants?” – and offers us this modular Quechua MH950 as the answer.

The two-in-one is a concept that already existed with these pants, which you could unzip the bottom section, practical but often annoying: it takes time, you reverse the legs, the zips get stuck, and then the eventual loss of one of the legs, so you end up with one-legged pants.

We put this new model to the test during a series of classic hikes and an aerial section where we needed a harness. At first glance, the Quechua MH950 pant has a good look; sober color, slim cut, which tightens at the bottom. They are comfortable thanks to the light and stretchy fabric, and preformed knees. You feel good wearing them. The slim cut and the stretch fabric provide pants that fit ergonomically and move with your movements, without feeling tight and restricted.  You can see your feet, you are precise, which is an advantage in chaotic terrain, whilst climbing.

The Quechua MH950 pant is well finished, with an elasticated waist and Velcro tabs that provide precise adjustment and hold up well over a long period of time. The advantage of the system: under a harness there is no extra thickness from a belt, and especially any buckle that would get in the way. And for those belt lovers, they have provided belt loops just in case.

There are two zipped unique hand pockets, quite small. No other extra pockets, either on the side or behind. The Quechua MH950 are light, a little thicker at the top, thinner at the bottom, and the good quality fabric held up well to abrasion in the climbing sections. Time will tell if it would stand up to constant use in these conditions.

During the test we had a fine rain shower that lasted over an hour. The water-repellent fabric did the job for as long as it could, a good half an hour, then absorbed the water. The MH950 remained comfortable despite the rain. The fact that the fabric is thin means it dries quickly, but inevitably because it’s thin, it loses its windproof and thermal protection.

As for breathability, in addition to the “breathable” fabric, at the waist of the Quechua MH950, at the back and sides, perforated fabric bands help heat, and condensation evacuate. It works well, they remain comfortable and even more so in shorts mode.

Now, let’s come to what really makes these pants so special: their ability to transform in a flash, with a simple hand twist, into shorts. The principle is a winding and fixed zip that starts from the knee goes around the calf and don to the ankle. It is surprisingly simple and efficient. And you don’t even have to take your shoes off! The lower sections then fold up into two dedicated side pockets, and you are now in shorts.

Well-proportioned, pleasant, ventilated shorts, with a flexible fabric strip at the thighs completes them for a perfect fit. The two pockets with the folded sections, which make a little ball to start with, flatten down quickly and almost disappear visually. To switch back to pants mode, you do the same thing the other way around. This system is very well thought out, very practical. Simple and practical, it does not turn the event into a palaver with zips or Velcro. You’d only need to see how the zip and pockets resist to aging.

The Quechua MH950 pants are a really great find with its roll-up zip that transforms into shorts’ mode in the blink of an eye. Lightweight, comfortable, and ergonomic, they are perfect for day trips, mid-mountain hikes, summer treks and even climbing. A product with excellent value for money, a brilliant success.
