Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide 1.5

The Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide 1.5 is undeniably a beautiful piece of gear, well designed and carefully crafted. This shoe feels both substantial, thanks to its imposing rear section, and extremely close to the foot thanks to a precise upper built like a sock. We really love the feel of the mesh: secure yet comfortable at the same time.

In some respects, it almost feels like a prototype — for example, the finesse and delicacy of the lace garage used to store excess laces. In short, to repeat ourselves, both perceived quality and design are clearly there. It’s a shoe that makes you want to tackle long distances or stack multiple weekly runs. Salomon positions the S/Lab Ultra Glide 1.5 for two to three sessions per week.

So how does the Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide 1.5 perform on the trails? It’s a high-stack shoe with a substantial midsole — not far from the “oversized” category. The 6 mm drop is clearly noticeable, with a quick forefoot rocker that ensures smooth and fluid transitions.

Right away, you notice significant cushioning, though not spongy. This level of shock absorption makes it easier to take on long distances without excessive fatigue. While cushioning is particularly well managed under the metatarsals, we still miss a bit of lateral heel support, even though this aspect has been improved on the S/Lab Ultra Glide 1.5. Some rolling is still present, which raises the question: over time and with mileage, will the foam maintain support and resist pronation collapse? We’re betting on further improvements in the next version. Runners weighing around 70 kg likely won’t be affected by this rolling sensation, but heavier runners should take it into consideration.

The heel area has been redesigned compared to the previous version. It is more ergonomic and less prone to causing hot spots.

The Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide 1.5 delivers a feel somewhere between comfort and energy return. It’s obviously not the most energetic shoe in the lineup, but the balance works well for long distances. On technical or demanding terrain, however, it prefers well-groomed, runnable trails, even though the outsole features 4 mm lugs. Outsole wear is quite fast, raising questions about long-term durability.

Foot protection is very good, especially around the heel, and the toe bumper is effective. Weight comes in at 297 grams, measured on our scale in a men’s size UK 8.5 / EU 42 2/3.

The Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide 1.5 is a unisex shoe, with a very high price tag.

A well-cushioned shoe built for long distances, still showing some residual rolling. Let’s bet that the next version will be the one where it truly reaches maturity.
