We tested the Sense Pro 3, now it’s time to test the 4th version.
We can state immediately that even if the changes between the two versions are minor – we definitely prefer running with the version Sense 4. Firstly, the cushioning seems more noticeable than the previous version, we felt the difference on rough terrain, even if it’s just slight. The Salomon Sense 4 Pro is designed to go fast and still feel the ground for good spring.
Having good forefoot or mid-foot foot-strike positioning is nevertheless what they are designed for. Heel-strikers could use them on shorter distances but will suffer. The 4mm drop forces you to run on the forefoot.
Agile runners will discover quite a narrow (the sole’s heel is also narrow) and precise shoe. The forefoot is enveloped without being too tight. Some brands play with visual effects and shape their shoes like aggressive SUVs, Salomon always opts for fluidity and closely fitting shoes. These Sense Pro 4 are here for speed and performance.
These shoes are for “constant speed on fast and rolling terrain”. So, all the tests that are out left and right that are basing their judgement on technical terrain are misinformed.
The Sense doesn’t deny its road-running inspiration, as you can see with various details; the stone guard is reduced in size and just has semi-rigid additions. Lateral flexibility is less than on models designed for steep climbs. Their 275g weight in size 42 1/3 isn’t felt when running.
The grip is pretty good even if we’ve had better grip from others on wet zones or rocks. The Salomon sole only has one gap instead of two on the Sense Pro 3 that clogged with mud.
These shoes are very breathable and not waterproof. They are beautifully made. What is the life span of these Salomon Sense 4/Pro? For the moment we can’t comment on the durability of the mesh.
The automatic speedlace® is as usual very powerful and must be tightened with care. On the Sense Pro 3 the two extremities of the lace came undone quickly. The Version 4 seems to be assembled correctly.
The Salomon Sense 4/Pro are for agile forefoot runners. Even though there seems to be more cushioning than the Sense 3 it is still firm. A very stable shoe to go fast on non-technical terrain.
