The Salomon S/Max are comfortable boots, easy to put on and easy to walk in thanks to a well-designed under sole, and that makes life instantly more pleasant.
Comfortable, warm, a reasonably close fit (98mm across the toes). On the snow we found these boots to be flexible, they lose a bit of precision when in flex because the shell has a tendency to ovalize. If you tighten down hard on the instep the shell squashes down. You need to tighten them with care and choose the correct volume.
The collar is flexible and allows your ankles to flex. This is very nice because you never have pains in your tibia, only precision is lost. The heel is well-held with good envelopment but we still noticed this problem of the shell ovalizing.
Matt black, the look shows quality, but nothing more. The waterproof joint at the front of the foot is not well adjusted or very pretty to look at.
We did like the very pretty buckles and appreciated the two straps at the top of the liner to help put the boot on.
We liked the envelopment of these boots, their warmth and comfort, but they do lose precision if you push them especially if you have a hefty build.
