The Salomon XA Meta is undeniably more of a shoe designed for power hiking than trail running. Right off the bat, it offers excellent stability that provides reassurance in all technical sections, but it also lacks cushioning in the heel and the metatarsal area.
We enjoyed the Salomon XA Meta on trails while fast hiking. Its Contagrip sole with 4.5mm lugs provides reassuring grip and a certain versatility on all terrains. If you plan to run with the Salomon XA Meta, it will work best for short sections, alternating with fast walking.
The front of the Salomon XA Meta is well reinforced, with an effective rock plate. The interior of the shoe is minimalist, as the comfort foam is kept to the bare minimum (around the ankle). The overall feel is quite spartan, but it’s efficient: the shoe weighs in at 300 grams for size 42 2/3 on our scale.
As we’ve seen, the performance of the Salomon XA Meta is very convincing on the terrain in fast hiking mode thanks to the lack of roll and the sensation of being very close to the ground. The foot roll is fluid. In terms of fit and lacing, there are a few shortcomings. The tongue is not held in place laterally, and being thin, it tends to roll over when putting on the socks, requiring repositioning on each side. Around the ankle, there’s the same technical solution used in Arc’Teryx trail shoes (which belongs to the same group): the material designed to hug the ankle allows small debris such as pebbles, twigs, and sand to get in. Finally, the small hook placed on top of the foot, which holds the excess lacing, creates a loop in the lace, which can get caught on branches or small bits of wood, causing a fall.
For tightening, you must disconnect the lace from the small plastic clip.
