We’ve tested several generations of Shokz products, and up until now, we’ve often been left somewhat disappointed—especially when it comes to sound quality in their bone conduction models. Things began to improve with the release of the Shokz OpenRun 2, which combined bone and air conduction. While the sound quality was better, it still couldn’t quite match that of traditional earbuds.
But with the arrival of the Shokz Openfit 2, everything has changed dramatically. After extensive field testing, these earbuds earned our First Test4outside.com Award—a first for Shokz.
To be clear right from the start: the Shokz Openfit 2 offer excellent sound quality, remarkable lightness, great comfort, and all at a competitive price point.
The most important improvement is undoubtedly the audio performance. Gone are the harsh, tinny highs and artificially boosted bass that once plagued Shokz models. Instead, you get clarity, detail, and even finesse across the sound range. The discomfort we used to feel from bone conduction is also gone. You can further fine-tune the sound via the companion app using the built-in equalizer (which we didn’t need to touch, honestly).
Though the sound is directed toward the ear canal using a 4-microphone beamforming system, you still remain aware of your surroundings. In other words, these earbuds don’t isolate you from the environment—making them especially well-suited for running or outdoor training.
Beyond how they sit on your ears, the comfort level is outstanding. More than once, we caught ourselves checking if we were still wearing them—they’re that unobtrusive, whether standing still or on the move. Unlike older models, there’s no headband wrapping around the back of your head. These hook around your ears, giving you more freedom and saving space. The two earpieces fit snugly into a compact case that’s perfect for transport, charging, and pairing. On that note: pairing is smooth, fast, and hassle-free—a definite bonus.
The app also allows for basic customization of the touch controls, and navigation is intuitive. A quick tip: tap gently twice to skip tracks—don’t rush it.
The Shokz Openfit 2 are rated IP55 for sweat and water resistance. Light rain is no problem (we didn’t test them in heavy downpour). Build quality appears solid, though battery longevity will need further evaluation over time.
In short, the Shokz Openfit 2 mark a clear leap in quality compared to previous offerings from the brand. The sound is finally up to standard. This is a product designed with care—lightweight, comfortable, practical, and 100% effective—for outdoor sports or everyday use. Unquestioned recipient of the First Test4outside Award.
