Jaybird Run

Christmas came early when we received the Bluetooth Jaybird Run inner-ear headphones! If Rory Bosio and Timothy Olson believe in the brand, then we knew we were promised hours of sweet sounds whilst running.

We tested them over several months whilst trail running, training and in the rain.

First positive point: you open the box and all is startlingly simple. As soon as you take the headphones out of their bag they start talking, in English, and tell you how they work! They guide you through the instructions by literally whispering in your ears! Synchronizing the headphones with Bluetooth apparatus is quick and easy. We connected the Jaybird with an IPhone to read the music.

The next essential step is to download the Jaybird application so you can modify the sound levels, bass etc. This step is mandatory to fully benefit from the sound system! It takes a bit of time to fiddle with the appropriate frequencies but it is well worth the effort. There are even pre-adjustments from Timothy Olson and Rory Bosio available. Or you create your own and they will be registered in the memory. The only problem we had was having satisfactory bass sound, it lacked a bit of density.

Overall the sound is very clear, very sharp on the high notes and full of presence, we would’ve liked a little more body for our personal tastes. You really need to use the equalizer on their application.

The other operation to carry out before hitting the trails is to choose the correct size silicone plugs for your ears – there’s a choice of four different ones, and four different sized supple stabilizers to enable the inner-ear headphones to sit neatly in your ear and not move once you are running.

Once you’ve done all of this, you can really start to discover the amazing qualities of this product created for the outdoors. The first major pleasure is running without wires – just amazing! I must admit, to start with we were kind of worried we might lose one whilst running (200 euros the pair!) so we wore a headband to avoid one popping out! Then once we knew we had made the correct choice for the silicone plugs, we used them without the headband.

In the rain they worked perfectly. They are designed to resist humidity (sweat) and water (rain). We don’t know if they are completely waterproof, we daren’t test them that far…

You access the menu on the headphones, left-right, you press with your fingertips to raise or lower the volume, to move from one song to the next. You can also do this with thin gloves on.

You can still hear sounds around you so you remain conscious of the environment. This gives you safety, slightly reduces sound quality – but if you are a purist for music you can buy the sound reducing headphones…

The connection between the smartphone and the headphones is very stable, we didn’t notice any loss of connection.

Bonus: the headphones tell you (speaks in your ear) the remaining battery time, (in English).

Jaybird states four hours of autonomy. The number is correct and verified. The very sleek box delivered with the headphones allows you to recharge them and protect them whilst travelling; so you don’t lose them and they don’t deteriorate. The box can recharge the headphones twice. NB: don’t forget the USB cable that enables you to charge the box! The ultimate would be to have an integrated cable in the box so you wouldn’t lose or forget the cable…

The Jaybird Run allows you to answer the phone whilst running. The sound quality is good for those who are wearing the headphones, a little less clear for those on the other end of the call (the microphone being far from your mouth), but it is very practical and satisfactory.

We found that the Jaybird Run were well-designed, well-manufactured, combined with ergonomics that have for once been extremely well researched. The sound quality is correct, only bass lovers will find this product limiting. The autonomy gives you a limit of 4-hours of sounds, except if you bring the recharging box with you (only 54g) and in five minutes you can lengthen your listening time for one hour!
