The Simond Alpinist 33 is a classically designed backpack built around a spacious main compartment and a fully modular top lid, which can be removed when not needed. Its DNA is clearly focused on versatility and adaptability, making it suitable for a wide range of mountain activities.
The top lid features a dual-zipper system for quick and easy access. It includes a spacious external pocket (around 1–1.5 L), and closes with a one-hand operable clip system—easy to open with a simple press. Inside, there’s a smaller security pocket for valuables or ID, complete with a key hook.
The main compartment is simple and efficient, closed by a drawcord. It includes a hydration bladder sleeve, secured by two small Velcro tabs. Two dedicated sleeves allow for the storage of a shovel handle and probe, plus a small zip pocket for papers, topos, or keys. The bag’s wide opening and generous volume allow for fast and easy packing.
One of the standout features is a large side zippered access panel with dual sliders, giving quick access to gear deep inside the pack without unloading everything. The bottom of the pack is reinforced with a thicker, more durable fabric, enhancing its abrasion resistance.
An external stretch pocket, sewn over the main body, offers rapid access without having to open the pack. It’s ideal for stashing a shovel blade, rain jacket, or climbing skins.
For helmet storage, the Alpinist 33 provides two mounting options: four attachment loops located either on the lid or the front of the main pocket. A removable helmet net lets you secure your helmet wherever you prefer and comes with its own mini storage pouch.
Ice axe holders: Two plastic loop systems allow for tool attachment or removal without taking off the pack—a major plus during approaches or transitions.
Ski carry: Lateral compression straps double as ski carry loops, and there’s also a diagonal ski carry strap across the back.
The Simond Alpinist 33 carries remarkably well. The padded, adjustable shoulder straps include load lifters for improved balance, plus an integrated soft flask holder (ideally suited for 500 ml; tested with a 600 ml flask). Each strap also includes a gear loop for carabiners or equipment.
The hip belt is padded and ergonomically shaped, featuring its own gear loop and a stretch zip pocket, perfect for snacks or small essentials. The combination of well-designed padding and a thermoformed foam back panel offers excellent comfort with no pressure points, even over long days.
With a 33-liter capacity, the Alpinist 33 comes in one size and is available in three colors: Black, Ochre Yellow, and Vermilion Red. It weighs 1.2 kg fully equipped, and can be reduced to 850 g by removing optional accessories. Simond offers a 10-year warranty (excluding normal wear and tear).
Our testers at Test4outside were genuinely impressed by this pack. Its versatility makes it a solid choice for ski touring, mountaineering, alpine hikes, or multi-pitch climbing. Simond clearly designed it with modularity in mind, and it shows—smart features, durable construction, and adaptability make it a real workhorse.
A rain cover would be a welcome addition, and while it’s not the lightest pack out there, that’s not its design philosophy. It’s solid, practical, and multi-functional, and it quickly became a go-to backpack for many of our team members. Award Hot Deal.
