The Völkl Rise Above 88 W is a women’s ski. It’s lightweight underfoot and oversteers a lot. You get the impression on the first downhill that it has no tail. If you put too much effort into pivoting, you do a full 360°! But, once you understand how the Völkl Rise Above 88 W works, you can take advantage of this mega easy pivoting in all difficult snow conditions; you do practically nothing and the ski enters the turn: pure magic!
Off-piste, the Völkl Rise Above 88 W lift out immediately: a super easy ski. It’s designed for light women, and with a backpack it’s still performs well so long as you measure your rear pressure. The grip is satisfactory, but not exceptional. It improves if you ski the le Völkl Rise Above 88 W centred, or even a little leaning forward. The tip chatters slightly, but it’s not annoying, and we didn’t notice any slipping. It’s the tail you really have to keep an eye on: don’t use too much rear pressure.
The Völkl Rise Above 88 W is a pleasant ski, very efficient doing skidding/smudged turns. All the effects are immediate. You don’t need to force it, it’s energy saving, and feels great underfoot. It’s quite elaborate but not technical to ski, you don’t need to be a high-level skier to enjoy it. Good perceived quality and carefully made.
We recommend it for relatively athletic skiers who enjoy the uphills and who want to have fun in the downhill. Not really for heavier-built or demanding skiers. A satisfactory ski that goes anywhere in a ski touring programme. Suited to skiers up to 65kg.
