We tested the women’s version of the ZAG Ubac 95. Like’s its male counterpart it is a very light ski (1250g in 170cm). Its target is a female ski tourer who’s looking for a 95mm waist to help get through difficult snow and thick deep powder. To give stability and confidence. A light ski both in the uphill but comfortable in the downhill, 95mm is wide enough.
The ZAG Ubac 95 Lady’s main characteristic is its aptitude. It pivots impressively easily and is super-light underfoot: you move your toes and it turns. When you want to react fast the ZAG responds (in a forest for example). It goes easily into a turn and glides through chop. It is designed for a skier who doesn’t necessarily want to go fast but wants to have fun and enjoy a natural unpressured touring rhythm, with easy skiability.
When you push it a bit through chop with a bit of extra speed it can go above the “player” level to “flying”! Especially the tip. You notice that the stability starts wavering throughout the ski but most notably in the tip: chatters, and slips. If the speed increases, and the slope is steeper, if the snow conditions degrade the ski really loses control. So, you need to remain within the speed limits to not distress it.
At a classic speed in chop its behaviour is fine. It doesn’t have the best filtration and comfort in the world, but the ZAG Ubac 95 Lady stays well on top of the surface thanks to its tip. It absorbs some vibrations, but some find their way up your legs. So, as we said, don’t go too fast or you reach its limits pretty quick. This ZAG is less fluid and its turns are less harmonious than some touring skis we’ve already tested.
Smearing and skidding turns are fine. If you keep at a moderate speed this ski is pleasant, but if you speed up you will very quickly reach its limits.
