Thanks to its light weight and width, the Atomic Backland 102 is clearly designed for freeride touring, in line with Atomic’s stated program. It feels comfortable in all types of snow thanks to its moderate width. In deep, low-density snow, it helps conserve energy and prevents the skier from being overpowered.
The flex along the length of the ski is fairly stiff, both in the tip and the tail. Choosing the right ski length is therefore essential. If the Atomic Backland 102 is slightly too long, it quickly becomes demanding and feels tense. It requires either more muscular effort or a heavier skier to be used comfortably without being tossed around in uneven snow.
The Atomic Backland 102 can be skied fast and remains stable. In pivoting turns, the ski is relatively easy to handle. It planes well, with the tip doing its job effectively. The raised tail makes pivoting easier. However, once on compact snow, the Atomic Backland 102 becomes challenging for lighter skiers at low speeds. Producing a stable, smooth turn is not easy. Heavier or more powerful skiers who can bend the ski will find it more compliant. Still, changing turn radius and shaping turns based on skier positioning is somewhat difficult. Directional, pivoted or smeared turns are preferred, where grip and control are very satisfactory.
Thanks to its hold and energy, the Atomic Backland 102 is well suited for steep terrain skiing.
The weight is very well controlled for a ski of this width. On the ascent, it is pleasant despite being wide underfoot.
The design is understated and restrained. The orange-tinted base adds a touch of brightness to the ski.
The outer structure, cap construction, and side beveling offer good resistance to edge impacts. The ski does not deteriorate easily and can withstand intensive use.
This ski is aimed at skiers looking for a slightly stiff, responsive ski suited to a touring/freeride program, preferably for stronger, more powerful builds.
