We were able to test this Asics Metaracer Tokyo, the limited series JO. To put the sensations into perspective, at the same testing session, we ran a Hoka One One Rocekt X and a Salomon Phantasm (without a carbon plate).
The Asics Metaracer Tokyo is a low-lying shoe, at least more than the Hoka One One. The Asics lists a 9mm drop and it feels a lot less. Anyway, this shoe is far from being inert, we once again have this enthusiastic energy of the current shoes, notably those with carbon plates. The Asics Metaracer Tokyo gives good spring, without doubt less than some models, especially the Hoka One One Rocket X. Written down the Asics is aimed at elite runners with a well-honed stride. The spring is present but well dosed too, you don’t feel like the bounce is excessive.
You can run fore foot easily where the area under the metatarsus has very little cushioning. When you run heel/midfoot you can really feel some cushioning, slightly soft but the hard point is reached quickly, faster than the Hoka One One at any rate. The roll towards the front of the foot is very efficient, a really pleasant spring.
The Asics Metaracer Tokyo is undeniably a very performant shoe but it doesn’t sacrifice comfort. We really liked its filtration, the sole’s quality is both very dynamic and filtering. Do we go faster with this type of shoe? It’s difficult to be categoric, the pleasure in the stride and its comfort are undeniable. The benefit is present but not massive, not anyway for runners who are playing for the podium.
Its narrow shape, especially at the heel, combined with a flexible foam leads to a little roll at the rear. Expert runners won’t have a problem running with these, others, who are heavy heel-strikers or less experienced runners, will need to be more careful. However, this racing shoe isn’t necessarily exclusive in terms of technicity. In terms of price, it’s another matter, 200 euros for 200g (206g to be precise in size 42.5), one euro per gram.
The finishes and manufacturing are of a very high level. Lacing is efficient (the laces are a little long). The tongue is judiciously preformed and doesn’t move. The mesh is very breathable.
The Asics Metaracer Tokyo is a very exciting racing shoe with its dynamic qualities. It has a carbon plate, which gives a comfortable stride with cushioning that isn’t over the top. Ultra-light with a very high price tag reserved for elite or passionate runners.
