AtomicVantage X83 CTI

FIRST

This ski is a carving dream. It is a marvel at changing arc with the slightest pressure, either carving or skidding. It rides just as well in an upright position or in angulation. Its only limit is its grip on hard snow where the tip and the fore ski can move around a bit, they lose adherence momentarily which means slowing down or levering up the pressure.

But at a normal speed it rides very well and is always ready to do whatever you want in any circumstance. The ski is at ease with any situation. Off-piste it is a marvel in all types of snow, especially in mounds where it pivots on a dime, and the tip works a treat. Its grip could be better, on ice it doesn’t grip like a Giant and the tip vibrates a lot, but despite all that you remain sure of its skills.

Atomic has bevelled the fore part of the ski to make it lighter. It has a carbon core and you can feel it in its reactivity. It is beautifully finished even though it’s a bit old school… A metal protective tip that doesn’t weigh you down. A playful ski, both precise and a bit fuzzy at high speed.

I ski Whistler Blackcomb about 70 full days every year. When I demo’d several skis and put the through several test in crud, groomed and light snow uses variable pitched slopes, the Atomic 83cti with a 176 length came out a clear winner. I can leave a trench with these on hard pack runs. Snow over 6in is not best with these skis.
The front shovel does give great stability in crud or groomed. At 100km they are stable and not wondering up front. Just lean the ski over and when the ski grips, hammer it down and it turns sharp. Then load up the tails and slingshot out of the turn. These are my best ski, except when it snows, then a wider ski is used (100cm or more under foot)

Needed/wanted a piste oriented ski for a mature techician. Tried numerous skis; Stoeckli’s, Kastle’s, Head, etc. My experience with earlier Atomic skis was not that good….I skied these in early March and purchased them immediately. The only way i can describe this is..precise, but easy…by easy i mean it’s easy to manipulate the edge in a carve or skid…less energy needed than the Kastles or Head’s…more variability than the Stoeckli’s…..a great ski for a skier who wants precision at varying speed, but doesn’t have 35 yr old legs….I take all skis on the same (very) steep trail. This one won me over after the first several linked turns.
