When Canada Goose contacted us to field test these shoes – we should say “boots” – we certainly didn’t expect to see a truck roll up and a delivery man struggle to carry the package. The Canada Goose Mantra are indeed sold for this season in an incredible waterproof case made by Nanuk. Hefty, very well made, perfect for slipping fragile kit into an aircraft hold!
Let’s get back to the boots, which are simply amazing! The price, size, weight, and design, everything is huge!
Don’t be mistaken, these Canada Goose Mantra are designed for extreme cold like Canada, Siberia, and snowmobile trips in the Far North.
The Canada Goose Mantra’s upper comes up very high, the interior has a removable liner (with Intuition lining). The tongue has a membrane. Canada Goose used PrimaLoft Gold for warmth.
Walking on the snow, you have the impression you’re wearing tanks on your feet: they are indestructible. You can go through any level of powder or wet snow, even through water (crossing a stream for example). The sole is very grippy, and the thermal insulation is noticeable even though we only tested them in European winter conditions.
Whilst we can’t criticize this exclusive boot’s performance in extreme conditions, we must address a few points that could be improved on.
The first concerns putting the Canada Goose Mantra on. You have to slip your foot into the liner first, and then fit everything into the boot. The operation isn’t that easy, even if you took a size bigger. The instep is too tight, and the double zips don’t go down far enough. We wouldn’t be surprised if Canada Goose changes this part on the next version of this boot.
The other point concerns how heavy it is: 1815 grams per shoe in size 43. It’s OK to walk for a bit, but not for long distances. The sole is ultra-stiff, it only bends slightly (it’s barely noticeable) at the toes, so there is no comfortable stride.
The Canada Goose Mantra’s two zips for opening the boot are housed under the drawstring, they slide poorly and tend to get stuck.
In terms of toughness, they’d be difficult to beat! They are tough as an old ox!
These Canada Goose Mantra are alien because of their chunky look, their price, and technical characteristics. Designed for (extremely) very cold weather, they are for very specific use. They aren’t easy to put on, so be sure to take one or even two sizes bigger.
