It’s difficult to hide unnoticed in the queue with these flashy green freeride skis from Elan. They glide through powder with ease and the rocker and tip create great floating capacity. Pivoting and turn initiation is a breeze. If you pick up speed the original handling quickly degenerates, especially if you like doing long and fast radius turns.
On tracked snow we found it behaved the same way, cushioning is fine at average speed but turn on the heat and you lose it. The tip is quite high and has a tendency to rattle on bumpy terrain.
On hard snow or on piste, even if you manage to put pressure on the ski-tip, it has a hard time biting the edges to turn. You can’t expect too much from the carving if you are looking for speed and performance.
Skidding turns is not a problem even if the tip sometimes stays in the air.
The Elan Ripstick is good for skiers who want a freeride ski but are not intent on performance. Derby lovers – steer clear!
