We know the Hoka One One Mach well because we’ve been using it since its launch, for years, especially for the running section in triathlons.
We have tested the Mach, the Mach 2, the Mach .
We selected it for this type of running for its lightness, combination of reactivity and comfortable foot envelopment.
We also like its stability. It doesn’t soak up water when you are sprayed on marathon-distance triathlons, so doesn’t get heavier.
The Hoka One One Mach 4 marks a turning point in the evolution of the Mach that traditionally is a shoe without much cushioning. With this new model we discover good filtration that doesn’t affect its performance. It means you can run for long distances with much more serenity, without suffering when fatigue kicks in and your foot placement is less precise. This cushioning is particularly well balanced. It assists in the “tonic” aspect of this Hoka One One Mach 4.
As this shoe is especially reactive, it provides energy and bounce. Note, so we are clear, this aspect isn’t at the same level as the Hoka One One Rocket X or the Carbon X. Don’t get lost in the Hoka One One road-running range.
The three models have a 5mm drop, the Rocket X (160 euros) has a carbon plate, it is the lightest in the range, 210g, designed for relatively short distances, a pure racing shoe. The Carbon X (180 euros) is 238g, very responsive, and aimed at longer distances. The Hoka One One Mach 4 doesn’t have a carbon plate. Its geometry, its ground support and reactivity are very different. The weight is on the other hand, very close: 230g on our scales. You can’t feel them on your feet, a real dream.
The downforce is direct, you instantly feel the rear-end efficiency, which is wide at the sole.
Unlike the other two carbon models, the Mach 4 has no lateral roll. Whether you run forefoot, midfoot or heel strike, the shoe remains stable, the front roll and tilt are fluid. This shoe is exciting to run with great sensations. If you want to “filter” less, running forefoot gives you a more aerial stride. This Hoka One One Mach 4 is suitable for any type of runner. It’s a real pleasure to run. Its relatively low 5mm drop doesn’t strain the calf muscles too much, and the front rocker is noticeable.
Beyond its dynamic qualities, the Hoka One One Mach 4 is superbly made. No seams, top-notch assemblies, the mesh is superb, breathable and very slightly stretchy. The overall volume combines comfort and precision. There is no friction, compression point on the tongue or elsewhere.
The Hoka One One Mach 4 at last wins our FIRST Award after four seasons of testing the Mach model. The shoe has improved its very sophisticated cushioning that provides comfort without compromising efficiency. The Mach 4 is a superb, very lightweight product for long distances and training. It is well deserving of this award.
