We had no hesitation in awarding the Inov8 MudTalon Speed V2 our Core Test4outside Award. It fully deserves the recognition — a shoe that’s brutally effective in mud and soft terrain, yet impressively lightweight and well-built.
Its massive lugs, made from a soft rubber compound, act like real claws, delivering phenomenal grip even in the stickiest conditions. Mud simply doesn’t clog the outsole. As you’ve guessed, this is a specialized shoe, designed with a clear purpose in mind. You can run short transition sections on hard ground, but it’s not what the MudTalon Speed was made for — and your legs will remind you of that.
With its 4 mm drop, 260 g weight, and aggressive outsole, the MudTalon Speed V2 shines in a cross-country or fell-running context. It’s a low-profile, precision shoe that allows exact foot placement, with no sense of drag at the forefoot despite the deep lugs. It’s a shoe that encourages a forefoot running style.
Foot hold is excellent — both at the heel and the midfoot. The only minor drawback is the rock plate, which is effective but slightly stiff at the toe flex zone.
The mesh upper is tough and the overall construction precise. Within the MudTalon range, this model sits between two others:
the MudTalon Zero (zero drop, racing-focused),
and the MudTalon 6 mm (for everyday muddy outings).
The MudTalon Speed sits right in the middle — built for racing and fast training.
An ultra-aggressive, high-traction shoe designed to go fast on muddy, saturated ground. Lightweight, precise, and powerful — the Inov8 MudTalon Speed V2 bites into the terrain like few others. Winner of the Core Test4outside Award.
