Julbo focuses heavily on the concept of ventilation—and rightly so, as fogging during ski touring or freerando is a limiting factor: you often end up climbing with the goggles perched on your helmet. Most of the time, a pair of sunglasses, lighter and more practical, is used instead. On the descent, however, ventilation becomes less relevant, as airflow can make your eyes water. This is precisely the case with the Julbo QuickShift OTG Reactiv, which features the distinctive ability to remove two magnetized pieces located under each eye, allowing the goggles to ventilate very effectively. Julbo had already developed a freerando-oriented goggle, the Julbo Lightwear OTG, where simply pulling the lens forward provided ample ventilation.
With the Julbo QuickShift OTG Reactiv, the brand takes things a step further with an integrated system of removable ventilation panels. Of course, the main drawback is the potential loss of the removed pieces when opening the ventilation zones. Care must be taken to secure them properly in a pocket or in the semi-rigid protective case (which is not specifically designed for this purpose). While the two magnetized pieces are held fairly securely on the goggles, they can still detach unintentionally.
On snow, during the climb, the system is highly effective at eliminating fog, especially since the top of the goggles is also well ventilated thanks to very thin foam.
It is worth noting that the goggles, already lightweight, weigh just 135 grams once the two ventilation pieces are removed. This is extremely pleasant: you barely feel the Julbo QuickShift OTG Reactiv on your face.
The dual-density foam, complemented by a thin protective layer (red), is comfortable. The nose area is well designed, although it could be slightly more cushioned.
In action, the goggles do not creak and are firmly held on the helmet thanks to the anti-slip strap.
Beyond its ventilation system, what we appreciate most about the Julbo QuickShift OTG Reactiv is the responsiveness of its photochromic lens, which greatly enhances versatility. You can ski without worrying about changing lenses to adapt to weather conditions. Transitions from shaded to sunny areas are handled very well. The Julbo QuickShift OTG Reactiv can even be used in poor weather. The lens shows no distortion, details are well rendered, and sun protection is effective. Only a few internal reflections can be noticed. We also like the subtle plastic frame around the lens, which helps protect it.
An efficient goggle featuring a removable, magnetized ventilation system for the ascent, combined with a highly versatile photochromic lens that allows you to ski every day without changing lenses.
