The compact Ledlenser SEO 5 was our companion for many weeks, on our trips but also out on the trails whilst running. It is very light and powerful for its weight: 106g for 180 lumens. It is very versatile for everyday use and a range of sporting activities.
In the SEO range it comes between the SEO 7R (220 lumens, 20-hours of autonomy, 94.90 euros) and the SEO 3 (100 lumens, 40-hours of autonomy for 29.90 euros).
You wouldn’t necessarily use it in race conditions as it isn’t powerful enough off road on trails. It would be ok on the road. That said Ledlenser have a very large range of headlamps for all uses: check out their very well designed website. We would recommend the SEO 5 for trekking and mountaineering and trail running.
We particularly liked the simplicity of its use. An on/off button and off you go! A crown dial enables you to adjust the size of the light beam. The lamp moves up and down easily and with precision. The head strap adjusts really easily and quickly. There is a bonus detail; a plastic clip that enables you to clip the light onto your back pack, or inside your tent, very useful. Bravo!
Head comfort is OK , the shaping could be improved to have better comfort, you really need to wear a headband under the lamp for better comfort.
There is a diode that warns you when the batteries are running out. You can lock the lamp so that it doesn’t use up the battery accidentally when packed away. You have the usual functions: Power for maximal illumination, Low Power mode for economy and Blink for flashing light. It is protected against rain. We didn’t test it under a deluge of water for a long time, but otherwise we didn’t notice any problems or oxidization. The autonomy obviously depends on the level that you use and the temperature, but in general the figures announced by the brand, 25-hours in “normal” mode are plausible.
We didn’t like the battery pack opening; not easy to handle, a bit tough on the fingers. The plastic used gives a cheap look.
The Ledlenser is a very practical headlamp, efficient and versatile. For trail running use we would advise using a higher performance model in their range.
