The Merrell Agility Peak 4 are back with a new tongue and lighter foam padding. The sole has been changed due to problems with the previous sole. The Vibram Megagrip has been used on this Agility Peak 4.
Straight away the testers testified to the superb quality of the design, both aggressive and fluid. Some of Merrell’s technical solutions have been kept and been judiciously integrated into this Agility Peak 4.
We want to particularly speak about the wide heel strap to help putting the shoes on and the lacing system.
The latter is particularly efficient, on all levels.
We were sceptic before testing, the very thick lacing, many straps (extra weight?) which are often weak points due to wear and tear. Once the Merrell Agility Peak 4 were on, we quickly changed our minds. Foot envelopment is very precise without being brutal: pressure is evenly spread, including the forefoot. Adjustment is quickly and simply done. Foothold is excellent.
The only downside is they are difficult to get on, even with the heel strap to help. The space to slip your feet into is reduced, you have to squeeze your foot in and then adjust the top because otherwise it has a tendency to fold up beneath your heel.
But once you’re in the Merrell Agility Peak 4, they are really comfortable and also with a sense of precision despite their bulky appearance.
One of its differences is the 6mm depth at the heel instead of 7mm for equivalent products. You feel like it’s not as well enveloped at the heel.
They say the shoe weighs 290g we weighed them at 305g. Average weight for this type of reinforced product for rugged terrain.
We were surprised at its behavior in its foot strike. The part underfoot to the heel is pretty rigid, which is useful in cross slopes and on long runs. We were expecting it to be really stiff and dominant, it isn’t the case. Merrell have figured out the front roll part of the shoe. Is it thanks to the 6mm drop? Or thanks to the Flex Connect, a fold under the forefoot? At any rate we didn’t notice the stiffness.
The Merrell Agility Peak 4’s cushioning is very noticeable at the heel and less and less as you move towards the forefoot. Filtration isn’t too much; you have comfort without losing all knowledge of the ground underfoot. You can attack the downhill without worrying about rocky paths. The shoes are solid, grip well and the stone guard is well designed, semi-rigid and well-integrated into the structure.
They are well made, seams are rare and discreet, collages don’t have any glue blobs.
Excellent trail running shoes and also useful for fast hiking.
The Merrell Agility Peak 4 are an adventurer’s shoe, that has very precise lacing system and great cushioning. Well made, great comfort for long excursions.
