The small Salewa Apex 15 backpack is originally designed with mountaineering in mind but can also be used otherwise : lightweight, tapered lines and simple practicality means you can use it out fast hiking, via ferrata, etc. A narrow shape it snuggles up to your spine and hardly moves when adjusted correctly.
Minimalist, therefore lighter, you have just the bare necessities for adjustments and accessories: ice axe/poles clip-in point, water bladder tube hole, adjustment straps for carrying heavy loads, hip belt (simple strap), mini inside pocket to keep your mini items in order. The outside flap zip is waterproof. No equipment loops on the hip belt. A good point about this pack is its resistance to water. Its slender form is perfect for sliding up chimneys, but it is less practical when trying to find something at the bottom of the pack, it’s necessary to take everything out.
The fabric is tough and survives hard usage. The Apex is fabulous in yellow (also comes in blue) but gets dirty quick. The back and the shoulder straps are foam padded with breathable mesh which helps reduce the effects of perspiration. The flexible back means you cannot carry very heavy loads, such as too many carabiners or friends. The pack is beautifully made, stitched to precision, the top pocket zip never gets stuck and the straps’ plastic adjustment system is standard. An extremely light minimalist pack with a rather high price in relation to other packs of the same volume.
