We have been able to test all the versions of the Salomon S/Lab, the first model, and the second.
Salomon proceeded like Apple with its iPhone, by successive micro improvements, knowing without doubt, from the start, that the large lateral straps would get smaller and finally disappear over altogether.
We were able to test, over the seasons, all the Salomon S/Lab versions, the first model’s not very aesthetic lacing system (which also collected various debris) is therefore absent on the version 3, which is a good thing, you gain a more aesthetic, fluid shoe without losing adjustment quality. Strangely, the hasn’t changed, it’s still around 285 grams (size 42 2/3).
One of the big qualities of the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3 is the way that you can almost run without tightening the automatic lace (Quicklace). It is designed like a slipper, obviously a bit of a pain to put on, but once you’re in, the foot hold is very good and above all it adapts to movement, and morphology: it has a powerful stretch effect. This inner also acts a bit like a compression sock.
We were a little less thrilled with the eyelets that you can feel on either side of the foot if you tighten the shoe much. For aesthetic and technical reasons, they are placed inside the shoe and push against the edge of the tongue. It’s not that big a deal.
Storing the Quicklace in the micro pocket at the top of the tongue is not easy, you need slender fingers. The lacing is powerful and precise. The ankle envelopment is precise, and doesn’t allow any twigs and grit to sneak in. Foam padding is present, the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3 doesn’t absorb water and so they stay light.
The dynamic qualities haven’t changed, you still have a very stable shoe, precise but not rock hard, even if it does have limited cushioning (especially in the midfoot area). It has well-balanced lateral rigidity. Enough to attack long distances without worrying.
The sole’s grip was considered good for long distances so it must be both effective on runnable terrain and possibly in more humid areas, and it’s versatile in short distances. The sole doesn’t clog up with mud.
We maintain the fact that Vibram would be more effective than the currently available Contragrip.
The Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3 has come of age. This new version is not revolutionary but it’s an evolution. It allows you to tackle long distances without a second thought.
