Salomon Sonic RA Pro

The Salomon Sonic RA Pro and the Sonic RA MAX (already tested here: https://www.test4outside.com/en/produit/salomon-sonic-ra-max/) are very similar. Both these shoes are designed for road use or track running. So therefore also great for triathlon.

The construction of both models is similar but when you take a closer look you can distinguish the differences. The drop is not the same; the RA Pro 6mm and RA Max is 10mm.

The weight differs too: 230g for the RA Pro in 42 2/3 compared to 250g for the RA Max in 42 2/3. But the difference is present in the cushioning. The RA Max is turned towards comfort, training runs. The RA Pro is aimed at performance, competitions, with limited filtering. You feel the ground better and the stride is more dynamic, with no wasted energy. These shoes are lightweight and enjoyable to run on the road and on the track, on trails the grip is obviously limited. In the central groove on the sole small stones can get trapped, which is annoying.

The foot strike is nice and laterally stable: the landing is sure-footed, unwavering. The precise foothold; the foot is snug to the structure up front but without any consequences of rubbing. The heel is well-encompassed and comfortable. We didn’t particularly like the black piping around the top, in flexion it could become a problem.

The lacing system is efficient: both powerful and precise. You can adjust them right to the front of the foot. The laces stay in place in the action. The semi-rigid protection at the front of the foot is reassuring. Translucid it covers the mesh: it is both aesthetic and functional. The toe box is a combination between comfort and precision. Medium width feet will be happy in this volume.

These Salomon Sonic RA Pro haven’t without doubt had the glory they deserve. Under the shadow of “trail running” Salomon haven’t contributed to the success of this Sonic range. And they deserve it! Cherry on the cake, the price is right! 140 euros.
