Salomon Stance 88 W

The Salomon Stance 88 W is an all mountain ski for women. It has a minimalist design, with the classic Stance inspiration: clean, precision lines, not particularly crazy.

We tested the Salomon Quest just before this test. The first question we asked ourselves was, why buy a Stance? The Quest is just as good, even better, ok it is maybe a little less “energetic” underfoot, but it is a really good ski and it has everything the Stance doesn’t have.

The Salomon Stance 88 W has a boat effect concerning its inertia. You have to pay attention because it pulls right. It is stiff at the waist and in front and as soon as you are badly positioned on the ski it pulls, it’s difficult to deform. If you lean back a bit too much it reacts quickly and understeers immediately.

It doesn’t have a spontaneous turn on hardpack, you need to be well positioned and go slowly: this is a binary ski, it works, or it doesn’t. This Salomon Stance 88 W isn’t an easy ski, you need concentration and skill. You can go fast with it if you know how it behaves, theirs is plenty of prime material underfoot, power, grip and dominance.

Off piste it chatters and sends vibrations vertically. In chop it isn’t as easy as the Quest to pivot into the turn. You feel immediately this ski’s weight and desire to be flat. In moguls it bangs, it’s really stiff.

Back on the pistes on hardpack it carves, most of the time! If you aren’t properly positioned or put too much angle (or not enough) its behavior will vary. You can very easily be taken by surprise.

That said, you can go very fast on the edge, but stay vigilant!

The Salomon Stance 88 W is aimed at very good technical skiers who have strong downward pressure and are sure of themselves. You need to have the skills to deal with a heavy ski that isn’t very enthusiastic. It’s missing some liveliness, pivoting ease, spring, even just a bit of fun. Is the performance level and accessibility a little too high?
