The Kintaro is a new generation high tech shoe, designed for experts. The asymmetrical horseshoe shaped, anatomically formed sole gives surprising sensations. It “compresses” the curve of your foot, but quickly shows its effectiveness on the rock and in its support. It fits like a glove thanks to the twin Velcro ultra-precise strap system that holds your foot perfectly. The semi-flexible Boréal sole is a Zénith model with 5mm rubber, which we found was a bit too thick (you can sand it down a bit by hand) yet extremely grippy.
At first you’re a bit lost off the rock, especially bouldering where you need to feel the toe-holds and when you need to squeeze your toebox in. In the overhangs, the heel hooking has fantastic grip and doesn’t budge. These shoes envelope your feet so well you could almost say they were a “second skin” so choose your size carefully. I usually take a size 7 with Boréal but with this model the 8 is a perfect fit. It’s really designed for expert climbers, for bouldering, or traversing walls with reverse inclines and overhangs.
It’s a shame that the soles are so thick and could do with being stickier! The ergonomics and comfort are unrivalled if your foot likes being in an asymmetric position. The price is reasonable for this very high tech model.
