Contrary to its little brother, the Salomon MTN 86 Carbon, the 91 logically suits maneuvers that require a wider base underfoot. It’s no surprise that this Salomon MTN 91 Carbon navigates more easily in challenging, deeper snow. Its weight is very manageable, making it efficient for uphill climbs without aiming to be in the ultra-light category (the Salomon weighs in at 1200 grams per ski).
In this width, the Salomon MTN 91 Carbon has proven to be high-performing and very stable regardless of speed—be it traversing or direct tracks. It doesn’t get caught in heavy snow. The shovel works hard, allowing the ski to emerge swiftly, maintaining a good line even though the front rocker is not very pronounced. It provides solid security when traversing hard-packed slopes (above rocky areas). It’s also recommended for steep slopes, offering a good sense of assurance with firm support. Its front-to-back stability is commendable, ensuring consistent balance.
Compared to the 86, this Salomon MTN 91 Carbon requires a bit more physical effort, more power from the legs. Transitioning from large to small turns is less straightforward. The tail is stronger, enabling more physical skiers to manipulate this part of the flex better. Consequently, one can achieve effects throughout the turn more easily—oversteering, slightly altering the curve, entering the turn with a bit more angle…
Pivoting, control, initiating turns—no issues here. Its behavior aligns with expectations for a good ski designed for ski touring with a freeride inclination. For the “classic” tourer, it might feel a bit wide. It’s crucial to choose the right size because, as mentioned, this Salomon MTN 91 Carbon is a bit more demanding, so opting for a size that’s not excessively long is wise.
It lacks a notch for the skin system. It performs remarkably well in uphill climbs. It would have been beneficial if the edge extended a bit further on the shovel to prevent excessive damage from impacts.
It’s responsive; you can ski it at speed, and it holds up. Some skiers might have preferred it to be a bit more playful, more forgiving. You can’t just shift your weight a little and wait for it to respond; you need to be on top of it, actively guiding it. It possesses remarkable qualities for those who can exploit them.
