The major running brands are digging deep into their imagination to innovate the soles, not the souls, but the soles. Asics offers with these GlideRide, shoes with completely original sensations. The upper is however traditional and fulfills its mission to envelop the foot. No, the novelty is lower down, at the foot/road interface.
We discover shoes with a very thick sole, oversized. The runner is high above the ground. Another feeling: we would have thought that the drop was higher than the 5mm stated. A deceptive feeling, no doubt due to the very high front part (rocking chair style) which tilts the runner forward in order to launch and relaunch in the stride. The rotation axis is located just before the toes.
Then there’s the very characteristic Asics GlideRide heel strike. Your heel is well-wedged to the base of the shoe, and the sole is very lively in all directions. This area offers significant cushioning, amazing softness. This is true longitudinally but also laterally, which is more surprising and even slightly unsettling. The foot strike is therefore not very direct, it is largely filtered by this layer that evolves and adapts according to your heel strike. This imprecision in the heel takes you by surprise at first. Then you get used to it and you run more midfoot.
Your joints don’t register the vibrations from hitting the road and therefore they are extremely comfortable. But, in the long-term or over long distances, what could be the impact on the tendons and muscles that are compensating? How durable is this very flexible foam?
At any rate, the Asics GlideRide are shoes of choice for long-distance running. Their foam padding is well placed and effective, the forefoot’s volume is well calculated and the heel feels cozily enveloped. We weighed them at 320g in size 42.5, the Asics GlideRide could lose a few grams (in the tongue for example). Asics has undoubtedly pushed the comfort cursor further while Hoka One One with its Clifton Edge offers a lighter shoe (242g in 42 2/3) but less pleasing. Ditto for performance.
The flat laces don’t slide much and initially require attention to be adjusted, but then they don’t move. The shoes are very neatly made, no traces of glue or uneven assemblies. There’s no doubt they are aesthetically very beautiful.
The Asics GlideRide are very comfortable road shoes that are recommended for long distances. Their high and special cushioning need a little time to get used to.
