We tested the Bollé Mute helmet with the Bollé Nevada mask (Matt Yellow color): a great combination for a matching design!
As for the snow test, it is a fairly voluminous and relatively heavy helmet,: 540 grams. In comparison, the DMD No Regrets weighs 365 grams and the Smith Maze.
The comparison stops here because the Bollé Mute is a well-priced helmet, you can find it at less than 60 euros. It isn’t cheaply made either. It has quality construction even if it doesn’t have MIPS technology. The helmet is carefully manufactured with tough and high-quality materials. We didn’t notice any extraneous noise, squeaks or weaknesses in the adjustments.
The head circumference is classically adjusted with a wheel (it is not Boa), which allows pressure distribution at the back and sides of the head: some ski helmet brands are satisfied with having powerful rear adjustment that can give you a headache if you don’t adjust it carefully.
You don’t notice the 540 grams on your head thanks to its good weight-distribution and thick foams. Suffice to say right away, the Bollé Mute is a helmet that’s suitable for cold conditions. Its thick lining provides very good protection from the cold as well as the lined ear covers. Audition is also greatly reduced and the filtration seemed a bit too much for us: you miss out on what’s happening around you, the environment where you’re skiing. Conversations with other skiers, including on the chairlift, aren’t always easy. We really wanted to customize the ear covers by removing a little bit of the foam. The ear covers are easily removed for the end of the season’s springtime sessions. Just remove two snaps to take them off.
The ten air vents are well distributed and provide efficient ventilation in cold weather. When it warms up, you start to heat up.
We liked the goggles attachment at the rear of the helmet: an upside-down hook. Therefore the goggles’ strap can’t slide out. It’s also more practical for fixing your mask.
The glossy coating of the Bollé Mute maybe very beautiful but it’s sensitive to scratches. The basic chinstrap adjusts and closes without any problems.
The Bollé Mute is a good helmet to protect yourself without breaking the bank. Comfortable, warm, not necessarily light, it is designed for piste or off-piste sessions.
